The body horror stylings of DC Universe’s Swamp Thing will not live on. On Thursday, Deadline reported that the series has been cancelled after just one episode into its first season. The move isn’t a surprise.
The rated-R style horror mixed with CW Network-style rated-PG framing just seemed like a bad fit from the start. Either commit to the dark path, or commit to making the show palatable for all audiences — but you can’t really have both. Some of this is also apparent in Doom Patrol, another DC Universe show, but it’s just not as extreme as Swamp Thing, which really gets gross at times.
Apparently, the higher-ups saw the same thing and mercifully drowned Swamp Thing early. Despite that, the comic itself is actually a pretty great title and science fiction world to inhabit, so seek out the comics.
