When a company’s stock is in free fall, it’s usually a good bet that it will soon announce something new that is meant to shake things up and perhaps slow or reverse the stock’s decline. In that tradition, gig work platform Fiverr has just announced a new AI video director hub for those looking for someone to produce an AI video for their corporate or personal needs.

The rise of AI in the past few years has put a serious dent in Fiverr’s marketplace. The platform had a market cap of $11 billion in 2021, but that market cap now stands at just about $365 million. Much of that steep decline is due to generative AI tools becoming available. Previously, if you needed graphics, a short video illustration, writing, voiceovers, or generalist music tailored to your project, Fiverr was an option to consider. But generative AI has taken those skills and allowed anyone to generate median-quality versions for the relatively low (for now) price of a monthly subscription to a wide variety of AI options from OpenAI, Anthropic, Runway, Google Gemini, and others.

In 2026 alone, Fiverr’s stock price has dropped nearly 50% since the start of the year, from $19.76 to $10.13. So the new announcement from Fiverr should come as no surprise. The surprise, however, is how quickly and haphazardly the AI video director marketplace seems to have been cobbled together. Instead of a slick page with names and faces of AI video directors, links to their work, and an easy contact button to reach any of them and set price terms, the page instead asks visitors to contact Fiverr at a single catch-all email address.

So is Fiverr offering a new tier of user-to-user services, the foundation of its service, or is Fiverr attempting to essentially serve as an AI video director agent? It’s unclear. But the ease of previous pre-AI era Fiverr offerings isn’t mirrored here, and may very well add a layer of friction that could make potential clients hesitate before sending an email to…well, we don’t really know who. For now, as it’s set up, if I didn’t know where to look and somehow found Fiverr’s AI video director page, I’d probably just collect the names and try to figure out how to contact them directly outside of the Fiverr platform.

The short video Fiverr produced for the new AI video director service was somewhat inspired.  But the execution of the actual product offering could have used a little more production magic.
