The first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu movie just dropped, and, surprisingly, it looks a lot like the TV series.

Why it matters

That’s both a good and bad thing.

  • Good for production costs, because it means that the same low-cost massive LED volume screens used to create realistic immersive environments are presumably also being used on this big-screen spin-off.
  • You can almost smell the profit margins percolating over at Disney.

The other side

But the downside is, well, it looks like the TV show.

  • So if you’re one of the holdouts who has somehow managed to live without Baby Yoda (aka Grogu) in your life, a big-screen version that looks almost exactly the same isn’t likely to get Baby Yoda refuseniks to break their alien cuteness fasts.

The big picture

Still, the film stars omnipresent Pedro Pascal, reprising his role as Mando, and is directed by the ever-reliable Jon Favreau.

  • History tells us that Favreau knows how to deliver both a great action film (Iron Man, the film that kicked off the Marvel win streak…assuming you pretend Blade doesn’t exist) as well as pitch-perfect kids’ movies (The Lion King, 2019, which earned $1.6 billion worldwide).

Between the lines

And if that weren’t enough, there will be at least a few nerdgasms when Sigourney Weaver appears on screen, a rare cross-franchise mix that might bring fans of the Alien franchise into the Star Wars space opera milieu.

What’s next

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
