The official full-length trailer for Musk, the Alex Gibney documentary about Elon Musk, has finally dropped, and it quickly becomes clear why the founder of SpaceX and CEO of Tesla isn’t happy about the film’s release.
Gibney’s voice opens the trailer over screenshots of Musk insulting him on social media since the announcement of the film. Then we’re given a montage of clips that show how the entrepreneur’s influence has grown. But by far the most interesting parts of the trailer are the brief glimpses of people from Musk’s life, including his first wife, Justine Musk, and one of the mothers of his children, Ashley St. Clair. At one point in the trailer, Justine says, “Somebody on Elon’s side referred to us as ‘the breeders’,” a reference to Musk’s reported 14 children with various women.
Also making appearances in the film are Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard, author Cory Doctorow, and tech journalist Kara Swisher. Of course, President Trump also appears in the film via clips of Musk’s involvement in government and the politician’s second-term campaign. Overall, the trailer paints a sinister portrait of Musk, and that’s with the short trailer only showing a few of the people interviewed for the film. And we still aren’t shown the AI-generated voice and avatar of Musk that have been discussed, which are sure to stir up a lot of debate regarding the use of such techniques to artificially include a person in a film they disapprove of.
So far, the recent concern that Universal might pull out of the international release of the film (due to what some allege is behind-the-scenes pressure) hasn’t come to pass. As for the U.S. release of the film, it will hit theaters on Oct. 9.
