The Odyssey has become the biggest film opening of 2026 at $282 million after just a few days in theaters, putting director Christopher Nolan on track to match or surpass his previous box office hit, The Dark Knight Rises. And despite the film being based on a story that is nearly 3,000 years old, the public has been completely drawn into the Bronze Age story of monsters and witches.
Universal Pictures, the film’s distributor, anticipated this popular culture embrace of the film and has given the public a way to immerse themselves in the lore of the sword and sorcery epic. A new app called Face Your Fate lets anyone create a three-dimensional bust sculpture of themselves clothed in ancient garb. Technically, such realistic sculptures didn’t emerge until centuries after 1200 BCE (the period during which The Odyssey is set). However, a key moment in the film shows a realistic statue of Athena being destroyed, so the app is in line with the aesthetics of the cinematic experience.
No download is necessary, users can just go to FaceYourFate.app on mobile, or visit the same URL via desktop and point their smartphone at a QR code to activate the app. Many IMAX showings of the film are sold out, and some fans are going back for repeat views, so it’s clear Nolan has captured the public’s imagination. This app is another way cinema fans can continue virtually living in the world of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon) until the film eventually makes it to streaming later this year.
