Following up on a message she posted on Instagram last week about AI, actress Reese Witherspoon has responded to the wave of anti-AI backlash she received in the comments of the post from fans.

“Well, I guess my AI post got people talking,” wrote Witherspoon. “To be clear, no one is paying me to talk about this. I’m just a curious human. My kids are learning about AI tools, I know a lot of founders who are vibe coding, and I hear about people using AI in EVERY sector of business.”

The backlash against her first AI post was so strong that the post eventually was tagged with a Community note, written by an Instagram user, stating, “AI has the potential to cause job displacement, create deepfakes and misinformation, perpetuate bias, and pose significant environmental costs through high energy consumption. Experts also cite dangers such as lost critical thinking, reduced human accountability & security threats,” the note reads.

“A single AI facility can consume as much power as 100k homes, threatening grid stability, increasing electric bills for communities. They also demand millions of gallons of water daily for cooling, causing shortages.” The community note on her post—unusually from her usually adoring fans—clearly struck a nerve with the Morning Show actress and producer.

“I want to acknowledge people’s concerns, they are valid. I’m aware of the impact this could have on jobs across so many industries. I understand environmental concerns. I care deeply about local communities. And I have concerns about impending AGI,” wrote Witherspoon. “I don’t believe computers should replace humanity. I’m planning on learning as much as possible so that I’m educated about this technological revolution. If you want to learn with me, great, let’s do this! If you don’t, that’s okay too.”
