Final Predator: Badlands trailer reveals new details

The final trailer for Predator: Badlands is here, and it reveals a lot more about what the world’s podcast nerd-turned-Hollywood director, Dan Trachtenberg, is bringing to the Predator franchise.

Why it matters

His last turn at bat, he delivered Prey, a brilliantly executed take on the franchise that took us into old America in the days of Native Americans, just as Europeans were beginning to colonize the continent.

  • In this installment, the protagonist appears to be the Predator himself (herself?), as the alien faces a series of tests on a foreign planet.
  • New treats include Predator light sabers, a seeming cousin of the eyeball jockey from Alien: Earth, frustrated emo Predator, and the new Predator-cycle vehicle.

Driving the news

This new trailer reveals a few more tidbits, including more human characters, more footage that indicates just how Elle Fanning as a synthetic human (Blade Runner crossover?) works with the Predator, and more intriguing alien flora and fauna.

The intrigue

It’s great to learn more, but the trailer is bordering on revealing too much.

  • It’s always good to leave “something” to the imagination: We see some of the mic drop moments of the alien animal battles, which kind of dulls the thrill of seeing it on the big screen.
  • The Predator dialogue would have been an amazing in-theater surprise, but now we know that surprise is coming.

The backstory

For those who don’t remember, Trachtenberg, a veteran commercial director, first rose to prominence as the co-host of The Totally Rad Show, one of the first nerd fan culture video shows from 2009 to 2012.

What’s next

Predator: Badlands arrives in theaters on November 7.
